Linux at the Outset to Support USB 3.0
Linux becomes the first operating system to support USB 3.0, standard which is intended to be another pervasive technology. Though devices having USB 3.0 are not still available but is expected that hardware compatible to USB 3.0 standard would be followed.
It was announced earlier this week by Sarah Sharp, a Linux Developer at Intel’s Open Source Laboratory that Linux Kernel will soon be integrated with USB 3.0. She wrote in her Blog that she is working with Keve Gabbert, an OSV person in her group at Intel, to make sure that Linux distribution like Ubuntu and Red Hat elevate the xHCL driver which is a host controller driver for USB 3.0. She also added that if you can’t wait and want the expertise as necessary can follow the instructions on “How to get USB3.0 support to on Linux now“, despite of the fact that there is no USB 3.0 compatible hardware available.
No doubt, USB 2.0 is an ultimate success. It had a very fast transfer rate 480Mbps which is been further now replaced by USB 3.0 sometimes called USB Super speed by about 10x to the present one. USB 3.0 is assumed to have a transfer rate of 5.0Gbps. Like the upgrade of 1.1 to 2.0 so as 2.0 to 3.0., the new connectors will be physically and functionally working on the former spec devices.
Cables for USB3.0 are quite thicker one which is easily differentiated from USB2.0; five more lines are added out which 2 are responsible for data transmit and others for receiving. While transferring the data, it boosts up the read and write at the same time from your portable device. As its transferring data is fast it would pull up more power too which accelerate the power output from 100milliamps to 900milliamps helpful for devices charged using USB port.
The Linux support is about to release officially this September and hardware is also on its way. USB 3.0 controller will be ready by end of the year and consumers would get it early 2010.
