IBM introduces Data-Masking Technology
IBM recently revealed that their researchers in Israel have developed a new technology to safeguard your sensitive data used in industries without disturbing ongoing business operation. The technology is named Masking Gateway for Enterprises (Magen), which is designed to conceal the private data before it moves to users screen.
Magen is technology based on data masking by screen scarping and optical character recognition of the confidential data. The data masking tools does not change the data but filter it before it reaches the PC Screen. This technology treats the information as a picture and using optical character recognition identify the part of information need to be blank or replaced by some values.
Existing data masking technologies basically makes copies while protecting elements said by IBM, which make more copies of data for protection. But Magen is designed to eliminate the need of making such copies of data by masking the protected data. Optical Character Recognition and predefined configuration helps masking to be done without changing the client’s application.
The company claims that previously no such technology was there to protect the critical data. Magen could provide a common solution to all applicants regardless of operating system and communication protocol used. The system can be easily adapted by the administrator to respond to the new policies introduced.
The technology is useful to all call centres and ITES organization to provide addition security and privacy to data. Most of the developments are made for text based screens till the date but would handle rich media too.

For Example:
There is call center in India for a Company Based in U.S. where agents provide Customer Support for the company Products. Then if agent In India is not running the application on his computer but he is running an application from the company’s headquarters in U.S. We add Magen to the system in India or U.S. or anywhere in between.
Then As when the picture of the Screen is taken and identifying the structures and labels present on the screen by optical character recognition. Initially the picture is shown to the administrator sitting in any remote location along with the brief summary of the data. The administrator can decide what he wants to do with the different labels and tables present. Summarizing, the computer takes the bitmap of the screen which is on its way to agent in India.
